How Should You Decide On Your Funding Goal?

This is one of those important, make-or-break questions you must ask yourself.

A funding goal that is set too high could mean you risking months of hard work and walking away without any capital, if you are using a ‘fixed funding’ campaign.

On the other hand, a goal set too low or wrongly could mean that you will have to foot additional campaign costs out of your own pocket, a costly move you don’t want to make.

Before you decide on a funding figure, here are three battle-tested, recommendations I’ll make:

  1. Start by totalling all project and reward fulfilment costs
  2. Budget for more money than you think you’ll need
  3. Always set your funding goal lower than what you need

**1. Start By Totalling All Project and Reward Fulfilment Costs**

Let me be honest: I hated accounting when I studied it back in school.

But as I started doing my own businesses, I realised how important it was to be able to account for costs.

Otherwise, your costs will spiral quickly out of control.

If you could do a quick survey of all crowdfunding campaigns out there, you’ll be amazed at how so many crowdfunding campaigns out there do a poor job with their accounting basics.

Recently, I came across a video game crowdfunding campaign that asked for a funding figure of $30,000, and its creator substantiated its figure only with percentage breakdowns.

But there were no hard figures to substantiate why they needed that sum of money.

So we’ll start with some accounting basics.

To set your funding goal, you start with the basic costs of your campaign.

Basic costs of your campaign include:

Fixed costs of your project.

This includes the costs of manufacturing your product, building a website, or renting a storefront

Costs of reward perks

Shipping and fulfilment costs

That includes mailing envelopes, parcel boxes, and international shipping fees for backers.

Marketing costs

This includes ad campaigns, Press Release distribution, and event promotion.

Crowdfunding platform costs

The costs can total up to 10% of your funds raised, after including in payment processor fees.

An important note is that Indiegogo charges 9% if you do not hit your funding goals, and 4% if you do.

And if your bank account is based outside the U.S, there is a one time wire transfer fee of $25.

Professional costs.

If you plan on hiring a creative video agency, PR or crowdfunding consultant, you should factor these in too. (*Note: There are plenty of different tiered pricing options out there depending on whether you’re an individual,startup or a full fledged company)

Once you’ve totalled them all, a good safety measure would be to add an additional 20% buffer to your total costs.

Most campaigns tend to overrun their costs due to manufacturing and delivery delays, and the buffer will help absorb those cost overruns.

So: Total Costs = Basic Costs + 20% Cost Overruns Buffer

Use a Spreadsheet

It is recommended to use a spreadsheet to help you list all these costs down easily.

You’ll also be able to forecast the expected number of perks that will be redeemed, and then subtract all the costs outlined in the previous section.

Go detailed and deep here, listing down as many relevant costs as possible that you expect for the campaign.

2. Budget For More Money Than You Think You’ll Need

A well funded project is one that raises far more than its funding goal.

But even with the extra funds, the money depletes very quickly as costs mount up.

Some of these costs include manufacturing delays, unforeseen shipping and import customs fees, packaging costs, plus factor in the profit margins that you expect to hit.

So when it doubt, always budget for more money than you think you’ll need.

3. Always Set Your Funding Goal Lower Than What You Need

AHA! I’ve got you here.

Does this statement sound illogical?

After all the talk about factoring in costs and buffering in addition cost overruns, shouldn’t you just tell your backers how much exactly you’ll need?

Actually, the answer is no.

We’ll come to that in a minute.

For now, know that another big secret to a successful campaign, is to set your funding goal at 80% of your actual funding requirement.

So that means if you need $100,000, ask only for $80,000.


The Power Of Social Proof: The Funding Bar

There are two reasons why setting your funding goal lower makes sense.

Firstly, backers like to see the progress bar move, and that they’ve helped you to get to the finish line.

If you have a smaller funding goal, progress is much more evident.

But if you set a high funding goal, you run the risk of much slower progress.

And backers can get turned off, as they might not believe that you can actually reach the goal.

Secondly, is the power of social proof.

A lower funding goal means its easier to hit the target. And when a campaign is fully funded ahead of its deadline, people find it more credible and hence less of a barrier to fund your project.

This is because others have already validated your idea by putting their cash before these people. Momentum generates more momentum.


One Last Note: How To Decide On A Campaign Duration

Kickstarter and Indiegogo both allow you to choose anywhere from one to 60 days for your campaign funding duration.

As a one-off, Indiegogo also allows you to extend your campaign up till 60 days, even if you’ve originally set it at a shorter campaign duration.

In general, its recommended to have a shorter campaign timeframe, between 30 to 47 days, rather than to max it out at 60 days.

The reason for this is because you do not want to wear your backers out with a constant barrage of emails and social media postings.

Also, a longer time frame can unintentionally communicate to your backers that you do not have the confidence to raise the funds required.

Within these 30 (or 47) days, you should do all you can to create a sense of urgency.

Send frequent updates, and try to rally people around your passion for your product.

An exception

That said, there is an exception to this rule.

If your objective of the campaign is to create brand awareness, and you have the resources to guarantee almost daily traffic flow, then it makes complete sense to fully max out the campaign duration.

This is especially so in the case where you are running a major PR campaign, and very often, you’ll have limited control over when an article about your campaign gets published.

As an example from the Duet campaign, we had a spurt of $7500 of pledges in a single day when a PR article was released late, just two days before we ended our 60 day Indiegogo campaign.

Had we not chosen the 60 days campaign duration, we would have missed out that vital $7500 in pledges, and much more!

My interest in tools can be traced back to my days in the military.

A QUICK NOTE ABOUT THESE TOOLS

Tools are well, simply tools.

Tools are useful only when they fit into the overall plan of what you are doing.

If you are building a new house, you do not begin by asking which saw or hammer you’ll need.

While I’m not an architect, I do know that houses are built from a couple of skilled sketches on a piece of paper.

Likewise, while I endeavor to present you the finest selection of crowdfunding tools as at the time of this writing, the tools you ultimately decide on for your project will only make sense in the context of a well-thought plan for your Kickstarter project.

My recommendation is that before you make the deep-dive into checking out these tools, first ensure that you already have a good crowdfunding plan in place.

I’ve seen too many first-time crowdfunders get sidetracked by the minor questions such as “Should I use MailChimp or Aweber for email marketing” when they don’t even have a plan yet.

Just in case you aren’t familiar with what’s involved in crowdfunding project, the next section “Quick Rundown of The Crowdfunding Process” will take you on a crash course of what you can expect.

A QUICK RUNDOWN OF THE CROWDFUNDING PROCESS

Before we jump right into the tools, it is helpful to have a quick understanding of the crowdfunding process.

I’ll run it through with you here.

Crowdfunding first begins with campaign planning.

You’ll have to decide on your funding goals, budget your costs, and decide on your launch date.

Your team will also be assembled together at this stage.

The next stage is prelaunch preparation.

80% of all crowdfunding work is done at this stage.

Then comes the actual launch.

If you’ve done a good job with prelaunch preparation, you should be able to raise at least 30% of your funds in the first week.

Guru is another popular website to find freelancers. Fees are charged according to membership level.

Freelancer is another online workplace website. Freelancers from all over the world apply for the jobs postings. Freelancer takes 3% or $3.00 USD (whichever is greater) for fixed price projects or 3% for hourly projects even if you are an employer. For freelancers, it takes 10% or $5.00 USD for fixed projects (whichever is greater) and 10% for hourly projects.

Elance is the number one outsourcing website. You can easily signup with LinkedIn and post a project, and begin receiving bids. Payments on Elance can be easily made by using Paypal. There is Escrow protection for the benefit of both Employer and freelancer. Elance deducts an 8.75% service fee to all invoices submitted by freelancers (but there is no cost for employers).

Cost: Varies by task. There is no additional fee for posting your project.

VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS

Zirtual is a US based virtual assistant service that matches people with dedicated and competent virtual assistants.

Cost: 30 days free trial. Plans range from $399-1199 depending on number of hours required.

Amazon's Mechanical Turk. By using Mechanical Turk, you can select individuals to finish “human intelligence tasks.” Tasks are wide-ranging, from data entry, classifying images, and even transcription services. Mechanical Turk deducts a 10% commission on top of the amount you have paid someone to finish your human intelligence task.

Cost: Hits are prepaid and Mechanical Turk charges 10% commission.

TaskRabbit offers a physical assistant to help you in your life. One can place his/her requirements and get bids. The site also offers virtual assistant for hire. For example, you can ask a TaskRabbit worker to shop for groceries (avg $35) or clean your house (avg $60). You can also ask them to help pack crowdfunding rewards for shipping! GIMP is a photo-editing software that has all the functionalities of Photoshop, but unlike Photoshop it is free. For a crowd funding campaign, it is worth every penny.

BlogDash can be used to search bloggers by using keywords, Klout score, gender, location, and more. By using the Dashboard, tweets and blog posts can be responded easily. It is an effective way to improve SEO by pitching bloggers for back links and product marketing.

Press Friendly is an on-demand semi-PR service made to help new startups get the press they need to have a successful business. They offer tools to help turn dreams into reality.

You can determine a reporter's location, phone numbers, email, social networking profiles, as well as areas of interest. Of course you can always build a free mailing list on Google and Twitter for the people you could reach out to.

Streak is made to help email management for business simpler. It provides a tool that makes managing different aspects of email a lot easier.

Cost: Starter- $19 a month, corporate- $39 a month and Enterprise- $119 a month.

Buzzstream is web-based tool that helps the world’s top marketers to market and promote their products, services and content.

Cost: Starter- $29 a month, Plus $99 a month and Premium -$249

CrowdfundingPr - Post an absolutely free press release for your crowdfunding campaign.

Cost: Packages range from $159.99, $99.99, $49.99 to $24.99

InkyBee is a tool that can be used to create media listings, search bloggers and journalists, generate notes (CRM) for each individual, and also make reports on your progress. InkyBee does a great job of easing the workflow between team members and recording all of your PR efforts in one place.

Cost: $99-$249 per month

BuzzSumo is a free tool you can use to discover great content that is going viral for any keyword. You can also see a list of social media users that are retweeting/sharing the content. The generated list of users is useful for you to connect with your targeted niche just before product launch. It doesn’t have CRM feature, so it’s best used with CRM tools like BuzzStream, InkyBee, or HighRise.

Cost: Monthly plans range from $99-$499. Annual pricing plans offer a 10% discount.

Haro connects ordinary people with journalists looking for their skill. You might not get featured, but you could offer your expertise and be linked to a high-profile article. It’s absolutely free to use, with paid options available to increase the chances of exposure.

GroupHigh is blogger outreach tool that allows you build, evaluate, and organize one-to-one, as well as one-to-many promotion and marketing relationships. It also functions as a CRM and blog research tool.

EMAIL MARKETING SOFTWARE

Aweber is an emailing tool that can be used to communicate with people who have subscribed to your newsletter from your landing page. Unfortunately, it costs money to use their service, but it is still relatively affordable for people with larger subscriber lists.

Cost: $19/month monthly subscriber fee

MailChimp is an effective way to send out newsletters to email subscribers and offers analytics to track click through and open rates. It has a slightly higher cost for users with more than 5,000 subscribers as compared to Aweber. But MailChimp also provides an auto-responder feature that can be programmed with pre-defined actions like sending a welcome email to new subscribers.

FORUM SEARCH TOOL

Webhose.io is a vertical web search tool that concentrates on client-generated content such as forums and discussion groups content. It can also provide tailored results.

CrowdfundingSoftLaunch is a platform and crowdfunding community that lets small businesses, startups, entrepreneurs and inventors to exhibit their products, services, events and concepts to the crowd. It also offers great resources and a targeted investor audience.

SOCIAL MEDIA AUTOMATION TOOLS

Beatrixapp is the top online networking assistant software that helps you create stunning social media content in just a few minutes.

Cost: $20 a month for Assistant plan, $30 a month for Manager plan and $100 a month for Agency plan

Thunderclap. This is practically like crowdfunding through social media posts. Thunderclap allows people to lend you their social media capital to help publicize your campaign. When a certain ‘lending’ goal is achieved, the shared messages will go far beyond your personal network reach.

Cost: Basic package is free but with very limited features. Prices start at $45 to $500 for the plans with greater features.

Twitter Advanced Search lets you search Twitter with different keywords, including people, places, dates and other search fields.

Cost: Free.

Snaps allows you to share images of your perks, team members, or anything about your campaign on social media. This app can add anything to your photos to beautify it and add content to it in a variety of ways. There are also special tools only for Indiegogo campaigners!

Cost: Free to use.

Newsly is a web tool that connects to your Facebook or LinkedIn to tell you when followers in your network make the news. It will help you make a better-informed decision about who to contact in order to get coverage for your campaign.

Cost: Free!

Hootsuite is another great tool that allows you to schedule social media posts and helps take the trouble off the need to consistently post fresh and captivating content. With the free plan, you can connect up to 3 social media accounts and get basic services and statistics that how your social media posts are doing.

Cost: $9.99 monthly

Klout is a content scheduling and discovery platform. With Klout, You can schedule social media posts and also find content in which your followers may be interested about. They also offer “Klout score” which is a measure of your impact or how your followers respond to your content.

One of the disadvantage is they offer overall score but lack statistics on individual posts. Klout suggests relevant content by using relevant keywords. If you are an “influencer” or expert in your niche, you can claim Klout perks, where you get free stuff (Example: $10 to spend on business cards at MOO.com website).

Cost: Varies. Request quote for specific pricing.

Buffer is a favorite for analytics, scheduling, and automation of social media content. The software allows you to schedule posts, links, and images to be sent out on different social networks at specific times (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+).

In addition, it provides statistics on click-through rates, re-shares, and likes. Furthermore, there is also a feature called “feeds,” which allows you to add RSS feeds to your buffer so that you can easily choose content to like or share from the RSS feed. Buffer can also recommend content for you to share from all around the web.

Cost: $50 -$250 monthly for businesses.

ADVERTISING TOOLS

Adroll is the most widely used ad-retargeting platform in the world. Reputable brands rely on AdRoll to retarget website visitors with advertisements through channels such as Facebook, Twitter, mobile, and the web.

Cost: Pricing depends on your needs.

Bing Ads. If you have limited resources to spend for your crowdfunding marketing campaign, search engine marketing can be a viable alternative as it allows you to target individuals based on their interests.

Cost: Pay per click price varies. The price is computed as your bid times the competitor's Ad Rank/your Ad Rank.

Outbrain Places your campaign on top media sites.

Cost: select a daily budget of your choice.

3.LAUNCH TOOLS

Once your project has been launched, you’ll need to keep track of backers’ email enquiries, and continue to promote and optimize your campaign for more publicity.

Here are some tools that could help simplify the task of keeping check of your backers’ emails so that you can focus on the high value activity of promoting your project to get more pledges.

CAMPAIGN CRM SOFTWARE

Olark is a live chat tool that can be easily embedded on your website. It offers features that make it very easy to talk with your customers and answer their queries about your product or service offered in real-time

Cost: The plans are calculated based on the number of operators you’ll need. Packages start at $15 a month for 1 operator, $44 a month for 4 operators, $116 a month for 8 operators, and $219 a month for 15 operators.

Zopim is a live chat software that allows you to engage with customers and provide better customer service.

Cost: The lite version is free to use. There's also the basic ($11.20/month) and $20.00/month package.

ZenDesk is a reputable cloud-based customer service platform that also includes ticketing and self service options.

Cost: 30 days free trial. .Plans range from $1-$195 for different types of teams.

CROWDFUNDING ANALYTICS TOOLS

Krowdster provides you with the tools for rapid, effective and successful crowd funding campaigns along with multiple solutions to promote and run the campaign successfully.

Cost: Free 1 Week Trial, no credit card required. After that $49.00 per month.

Crazy Egg. One of the first things website owners discover when utilizing Crazy Egg is that site visitors are clicking on things that aren't even links. Where might that be happening on your website? Stop making guesses about what's working, and begin to see data-backed heatmaps about where visitors are clicking on your website.

Cost: Put Crazy Egg to test on a free trial for 30 days. The prices cost $9 a month for the standard plan, $19 a month for Plus and $49 a month for Pro Membership

Kicktraq. Download this plug-in which lets you see a variety of information on every campaign, including anticipated funding targets and much more.

Cost: Free.

Kickstarter Creators Handbook is a handbook fully loaded with key knowledge on how to successfully run a campaign.

Cost: Kickstarter keeps 5% of funds collected. In addition, there will be payment processing fees of around 3-5%.

CAMPAIGN PROMOTION SITES

Upworthy is a search engine for videos. Videos are listed in various categories. Users can also share videos with others.

Cost: Free!

CrowdfundingClassifieds lets you post a free classified listing for your campaign. Find another crowdfunding campaign creator for cross promotion opportunity, hire workers, or post an advertisement etc.

Cost: Free!

Indiewire Project of the Day promotes a new film project everyday and regularly features crowdfunding campaigns. People can submit their projects to the Projects of the Day category.

Cost: Free, if submitted project is selected for Project of the Day

Indiegogo Updates. Your contributors are a great way to strengthen your marketing efforts and the Indiegogo Updates tab is a great tool to help manage communications you’re your contributors.

Cost: Free to use.

The Gadget Flow showcases "cool" items on daily basis. The site allows shoppers to search for different devices they might need such as cell phone covers or wallets.

Cost: Free to visit

Backershub is your number one source for great discounts on Kickstarter-funded products. Every month Backershub works with a constantly updated list of Kickstarter alumnus to bring to its community of backers the best crowdfunding deals.

Jamplify lets you successfully manage a referral contest for your fans and followers.

Cost: Varies

CROWDFUNDING EVENTS

EventBrite. With EventBrite, you can successfully create your own event. It connects people together and turns passion into a business. Eventbrite offers everything you’ll need to host your event as excellently as possible.

Cost: Eventbrite charges 2.5% of the ticket price and $0.99 per ticket, plus a 3% payment-processing fee in U.S. dollars

Silicon Valley CrowdFund Ventures is a major crowdfunding expo and conference.

Cost: Offers a wide variety of customized solutions on a per-campaign basis.

Crowdfunding Professional Association is a nonprofit company in the crowdfunding industry which provides a specialized network and tools to keep the crowdfunding eco-system healthy. It also provides industry with crowdfunding education and ensures investors are protected too.

Cost: No cost as it is a non-profit organization.

CrowdfundingRoadMap is an annual crowdfunding convention. The convention also offers a bootcamp, alongside many other events.

Cost: Ticketing information is not out yet for 2015.

You’ll have to ensure that your rewards are manufactured, shipped and delivered in time to your loyal backers.

On top of fulfillment, you’ll have to continue finding new ways to continue selling your product.

The resources listed here will help you to efficiently deliver your products to backers or open up new selling streams.

SHIPPING & FULFILLMENT RESOURCES

Warehousing and Fulfillment connects businesses with warehouses to meet their needs effectively.

Cost: Free quotes available

Shipwire is an e-commerce warehousing and fulfillment company. The company counts reputable names like Evernote and Zynga amongst their customer base. They offer downloadable PDFs for crowd funders, together with the ebook: “Fulfilling Kickstarter: Sending your rewards, and Kickstarting Your Idea into a Shippable Reality”.

Cost: Rates vary

ShipStation makes it easier to ship products yourself. It coordinates with major transporters, like USPS, FedEx, and UPS, so that you can easily generate shipping labels and slips in bulk. It also offers a great deal of other tools for shipping management.

Cost: $25-$145 monthly

Fulfillrite features selected crowdfunding articles on its blog about subjects like estimating costs for your Kickstarter campaign. They have been offering e-commerce order fulfillment for a few years now, along with same-day shipping services.

Cost: Varies. Request for quote.

BackerKit is a dashboard that lets you manage rewards fulfillment and dealings with your funders after the end of a campaign, so you’ll not need to coordinate everything on emails and worksheet.

Cost: $299 startup fee, 1-2% of campaign funds raised (if not using Backerkit). If using Backerkit, they’ll take 5-20% of funds raised.

POST CAMPAIGN PRE-ORDER RESOURCES

Selfstarter.Us is an open source platform for ad-hoc crowdfunding that can be used to raise funds for your product. It was created by Lockitron after they were turned down from Kickstarter. Based on Ruby on Rails, this platform can be personalized to your needs.

Cost: Free!

Woocommerce is a well known open source e-commerce plug-in for Wordpress Platform. Use it to get pre-orders for post crowdfunding requests.

Cost: Plugin is free to download. Extensions are available for free as well or commercial license.

Kickstand by Shopify. One of the best things can done for the business is to make sure that it has a website before the launch.

Having a website is beneficial in many ways like more interest on a platform, better SEO as a result from back links and traffic from Kickstarter and Indiegogo, and also the ability to generate cashflow from pre-sales. Kickstand closely mimics your campaign page so do check it out.

Cost: Free or paid themes available. Paid themes range from $80-$150.

Crowdhoster is another popular Crowdtilt initiative and it permits creators to launch their own crowdfunding page without being a programming expert. It is free unlike Kickstarter or Indiegogo. They also have a new “recurring billing” feature to help you solicit backer funds. Crowdhoster also offers themes that you can select for your crowdfunding page.

Cost: Varies. 2.5% or VIP pricing. Also 2.9% credit card processing fee + $0.30 per transaction.

CauseVox is quite popular for donation-based crowdfunding and fundraisers, but it can be used to continue crowdfunding for a product once your Kickstarter campaign has ended. They have more features and functionality, but also charge 2.5% transaction fee.

If you would like to manage multiple fundraising pages or edit html/css for your page, charges range from $49-$129 per month. You can even implement “donation tiers” if you wish.

Cost: $49-$129 per month plus 2.5% fee.

POST CAMPAIGN MARKETPLACES

Haystakt helps inventors and makers commercialize their creative products at crowd-determined prices.

Cost: 5% fee on sales or orders

TinyLightBulbs is a post crowdfunding store which offers items for sale that have been sponsored by crowdfunders.

Cost: No charges for listing product

Shopify quickly helps you setup your post campaign pre-order page.

Cost: You pay for purchase of themes. If selling products online only: $29/month, $79/ month, $179/month. If selling products in store: packages range from $49/month, $99month to $199/month. If selling products online and in-store, prices range from $69/month, $199/month to $219/month

CrowdOutlet is the leading marketplace for crowdfunded products. CrowdOutlet seeks to connect inventors with consumers who are looking for unique and exceptional products. It helps to keep the products in the spotlight and give them a chance for continued success beyond the initial funding campaign.

Cost: Varies

ForeverGeek is a new Kickstarter shop that sells products that have been successfully funded on Kickstarter. The store also features the ForeverGeek blog that targets people into anime, comics, movies, television, and “geekery.”

Cost: Varies

CAMPAIGN MANAGEMENT

Kimonolabs converts website data into an Application Programming Interface (API) that can then be integrated into a web or mobile app. This is useful especially for tracking backer comments without the need for you to sit in front of your Kickstarter page all day long. Kimono also hosts your APIs for you and runs them as per your schedule.

Cost: No cost at the moment. Two premium options will be available in the future but no costs are set yet.

CROWDFUNDING BLOGGERS & INFLUENCERS

CrowdFundBeat mainly covers news and information on the crowdfunding industry. It is run by Stuart Hillston in the UK, Philip Chen and Sydney Armani in the US, and Megan Kiakorian in Canada.

Cost: Free to read.

CrowdCrux is another crowdfunding website created by Salvador Briggman. It has been featured on CNN, the New York Times, and more. It’s a great source for tips and interviews with successful crowdfunding creators.

Cost: Free.

Crowdfunding Downunder is a crowdfunding blog by Jane Bartlett. She holds regular meet ups and also holds workshops in Perth, Western Australia.

Cost: Free

SucceedInYourPajamas is also a new website and does not solely focus on crowdfunding, but has some excellent interviews done with Kickstarter campaign creators.

Cost: Free

CrowdfundUk is a blog by Anne Strachan. Anne offers workshops and is a freelance fundraiser.

NowStreetJournal – is an equity crowdfunding blog and event management company created by Dara Albright.

VaporStarter pinpoints bad/fraudulent crowdfunding projects and also allow users to submit bad crowdfunding projects.

CROWDFUNDING WEBSITE AGGREGATORS

CrowdingIn is a listings website for UK crowdfunding companies. Most of these listings are for non-profit organizations.

Cost: Free service for everyone in the UK.

CrowdfundingWebsiteReviews is a website that gives ratings and reviews crowdfunding websites. With their reviews, you can make a better decision on the choice of your crowdfunding website for your project. Websites are ranked by categories to make navigation of the different reviewed sites easier.

Cost: Free

CrowdsUnite is a crowd funding education website that guides users through the crowdfunding procedure from beginning to end. They have free databases but their customized consulting services do charge money.

Cost: One hour of consulting services for $200.

530Funds is a service that offers investor verification and similar other products. It helps investors comply with the JOBS act.

Cost: Services range from $59 to $69. Bulk discounts are offered as well.

CrowdfundingBlog.com is a crowd funding blog for businesses and campaigners to read tips, get advice and instructions related to industry. They also provide excellent resources like videos, books and lists of most funded campaigns.

TEAM AND DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT

Trello is a free, flexible and easy-to-use tool for organizing your to-do lists with your team. Trello allows you to check everything about your project with a quick glance.

Cost: Free

Doodle is a nifty tool that you can use to coordinate schedules with other fellow teammates. It has a pretty uncomplicated and easy-to-use interface.

Cost: Free for limited use. $69 a year.

DropBox is a cloud based service for businesses that lets you store all your documents, images, videos and much more in one convenient place. Your content stays absolutely safe and secure and accessible in the cloud, so long as you have an Internet connection.

Cost: Free trial. $15/user/month afterwards.

Evernote is a digital notebook. You can make lists, research papers, papers, add notes and much more. Notes can be typed, cut and pasted from pictures, transcribed and so on. You can likewise covert your notes into stunning presentations with just few clicks.

Cost: Free individual basic account, $5/month for premium individual account, and $10/month/user for business account.

Google Drive is one of the best DropBox alternatives out there. It comes free with Gmail accounts, but payment is required depending on how much data you'd like to store.

Cost: Free

Google Docs is basically the familiar office suite of tools that businesses use (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), with the exception that it is web based. Google Docs comes free with Gmail account. By making a document and inviting employees or co-workers, changes can be seen in real time.

Cost: Free

Basecamp is a great project management tool made by 37signals who are also the creators of the Rails web development framework. With Basecamp, you can easily setup projects, upload documents, create and assign tasks and more. There is also a calendar where teammates can coordinate with each other so that every one your team can see what everybody has been up to.

Cost: $25-$150 monthly, $3000 annually

Asana was created by Dustin Moskovitz, cofounder of Facebook. This tool helps you assign tasks to your team members, set milestones, and also has a discussion feature for your project. The company's goal is to ultimately replace all email that comes at the beginning of every new project, and streamline communications.

Cost: $21-$750 per month but must be paid annually

PHEW!

You’ve just gone through a long long list of crowdfunding tools that might be of good use for your next Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign.

To be honest, there are a lot more tools that still aren’t covered in this book.

In the months and years to come, I’ll add in more tools as more 3rd party software providers pop up in the crowdfunding scene.

The crowdfunding eco-system is set for rapid growth, and along with the growth will be plenty of these crowdfunding services and tools on the fringes.

How Doros Raised Over $1 million On Indiegogo With Only $200

Today I want to share with you about a guy named Doros Kyriakoulis, the founder of the GOKey project.

He raised an amazing $1,032,168 in July 2014 on Indiegogo.

Why you should learn how to do an effective crowdfunding launch

“John, could you run our crowd funding campaign?”

I said yes to my boss that day. After all, he was paying my salary.

But on the inside I was freaking out:

“I don’t know how to do this. You’ve got the wrong person for this job.

What if I look stupid messing this up, big time?”

Over a year ago those were the exact thoughts that raced through my mind.

You see, I was fresh out of university and had zero marketing experience; much less crowd funding.

In short, if you had told me back then that I would someday raise $100,000, I would have thought you were crazy.

But today it’s a different story.

In the end, I managed to help raise over 100 thousand dollars on Indiegogo, and have gone on to advise over 15 startups with their crowd funding campaigns.

Since then, I’ve learnt so many things about crowd funding, and have been quite successful.

For that, I’m extremely thankful.

And I empathise and can relate when people share their crowdfunding concerns, especially if its their first time crowdfunding.

Deep down in them, the fear of failure lurks somewhere, and it’s expressed through different concerns like:

“John, I just don’t feel confident of myself at all to run a crowdfunding campaign”

“I’ve read, Googled alot about crowdfunding, but don’t know where to start”

If you identify with any of those concerns, here’s an encouragement for you: simply by reading this post, I assume you're already actively searching for crowdfunding answers.

That means you are already a step ahead of the majority of people who only dream of ideas but never take any action.

Now allow me to further explain three reasons why people fear failure:

Crowdfunding has a high failure rate

And subconsciously we believe failure might also happen to us.

It’s true that only 43% of Kickstarter projects ever hit their funding goals.

12% don’t even raise a single cent.

Quite naturally, this makes many people(myself included) shrink back in fear from taking action.

I’ve found projects fail mainly due to one of these two reasons:

-People can’t see clearly how your product will benefit them

-Nobody knows your project exists (i.e lack of proper marketing)

But it doesn’t have to happen to you.

These two problems can be avoided. There is a proven way to minimize the risk of failure, and maximize your chances of crowdfunding success.

That’s if you follow a disciplined crowdfunding strategy that I’ll show you in just awhile.

Too much information, too little time

If you’re thinking of doing a crowdfunding project, time is extremely precious.

Each day delayed could cost you anywhere between $100-$10000 of missed opportunities.

Or a competitor could release a similar product before you and snag your sales.

Having too much info, but too little time was the biggest headache I faced when I first started out on our project.

From the time my boss asked, I had only 3 months to do things like filming the video, co-ordinating the team, write pitch copy, market the product, and plan the launch.

Remember I was brand new to all these, so I had to first figure them out. So many things to do in so little time.

So I looked hard for a simple, step-by-step guide that could teach me how to put together a good crowdfunding launch plan.

It turned out there was no such guide, even though there was no lack of crowdfunding advice on the Internet.

But the information were scattered in bits and pieces throughout different blogs, articles, and PDFs.

Just to simplify the overwhelming amount of information into an actionable plan, took me a full month.

And it is for helping you minimize the headache I went through, save time, and launch faster, that I put together The Crowdfunded Kit.

“But I don’t know how”

Neither did I.

In fact, I was trained in IT, not marketing.

I don’t have a Masters in marketing or business and have never taken up a sales job before.

But if you ever want your project to succeed, you must work on getting good publicity, in order to drive traffic to your campaign page.

If you take the giant task of getting publicity and follow a solid launch plan everyday it becomes attainable.

It was by sticking to that launch plan, and learning from successful projects, that I was able to greatly reduce the steep learning curve.
